Galatians 6:2 KJV
Family Bible –
The end of the latter to the Galatians consists of a series of practical exhortations. Having explained extensively what it means to be justified by faith alone and not by works of the law, Paul proceeds to describe how the law continues to function as a positive guide for those who have been saved by grace. In verses 5:16-6:6, Paul emphasizes the power of the HOLY SPIRIT to change our lives as we grow in holiness rooted in our justification. As we bear one another’s burdens, we demonstrate the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT in our lives and give honor to GOD. As you pray, ask the LORD to help you to understand the proper relationship between the Law and the Gospel. Pray that as you grow in your understanding of the Law, you would become increasingly aware of your sin and your need for GOD’s forgiveness offered in the Gospel. As you become more aware of GOD’s forgiveness, pray that you would grow in gratitude and long to respond to GOD by living according to His Law.
Is the Law of GOD a good thing or a bad thing? The key to understanding this difficult concept is realizing that the Law of GOD is a good thing because it teaches us how bad we are. It shows us that we need a Savior because it forces us to realize the seriousness of our sin. The end of the letter to the Galatians contains a series of practical commands. Paul already told the Galatians that they can only be saved by grace and not works of the Law. Then he goes on to teach them that the Law is not bad because it cannot save. Rather, the Law teaches us not only of the seriousness of our sin, but also serves as a guide for how we should live now that we have been forgiven for our sin.
Can you remember a time when you had a task that was just too difficult for you? Maybe it was something obvious like carrying something that was just too heavy. Or maybe it was something that you didn’t quite have the skills to accomplish. At those points it makes all the difference in the world if a friend or someone with the ability to help steps in and helps you. The picture that Paul paints of the CHRISTian life in Galatians is just like this. He reminds us that the CHRISTian life is not something we can do on our own. In this verse he reminds us that we need the help of others to encourage us to follow CHRIST. JESUS fulfilled the Law for us in his perfect life of obedience to GOD. Now he calls us to bear one another’s burdens because He bore the ultimate burden of our sin. While we could never have followed GOD’s Law perfectly, GOD has forgiven us because of JESUS’s perfect obedience and sacrificial death. As you pray, remember that JESUS carried the burden for your sin. As you give thanks for that gift, allow your gratitude to encourage you to think about how you might live as an encouragement to others in response.
