Is He Listening? When we bend our knees to pray, GOD bends His ear to listen.
My GOD, my GOD, why have You forsaken me?
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your GOD reigns.”
“JESUS said unto him, Thou shalt LOVE the LORD thy GOD with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
Matthew 22:37 KJV
LOVE fulfills the Law; it does not replace it.
This verse lies at the heart of JESUS confrontation with the Sadducees (22:23-33) and the Pharisees (22:15-22; 22:34-46). In this verse JESUS responds to the Pharisees’ question: “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” JESUS’ reply is simple: LOVE GOD with all your heart, soul and mind. For JESUS this teaching is the summary not only of the Law, but all the Old Testament (22:40). LOVE fulfills the Law; it does not replace it. Of course, the reality is that we all fail to LOVE and so fail to meet the Law’s requirements. As you pray, allow this reality to lead you to GOD for mercy. The Law shows us our sin and points us to CHRIST in order that we can glory in our forgiveness. Pray that you would have a heart of gratitude to obey the commands that God has given out of thankfulness for His mercy for us.
If we just LOVE GOD like we should, we will automatically obey His commands.
Do you ever think about what people mean when they say, “I tried my best” or “I worked as hard as I could?” Sometimes it seems like no matter how hard we try or work we could always do a little bit more. So what did JESUS mean when he taught us to LOVE GOD with all our heart, soul, and mind? How do we do that? What would it look like? Do you LOVE GOD with all your heart, soul, and mind? In some ways, JESUS’ words simplify the Law of GOD given to us in the Bible. If we just LOVE God like we should, we will automatically obey his commands. On the other hand, here JESUS shows us what a high standard the Law really is. Who of us could actually do this perfectly, totally, and all the time? The primary purpose of the Law is to show us that we need a Savior and to have our sins forgiven. As you think about what it means to LOVE GOD with all your heart, soul, and mind, spend some time in prayer asking GOD to forgive you for how you fail to do this. As you think of GOD’s great mercy in forgiving you ask Him to show you specific ways that you might grow in your LOVE for GOD and your “neighbor.”
